My students and colleagues, here and abroad, affectionately call me Miss Maggie. I have many years of experience as a substitute teacher of many subjects, a tutor and an adjunct instructor of international students. I taught for 5 years in the English Language Institute at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. I simultaneously tutored English to Japanese employees at a local auto parts factory and university athletes. In between those years, I managed to teach in the English Foundation Program for 4 years at Qatar University in Doha, Qatar. For the last almost 7 years, I have been substitute teaching in northern Michigan. I will teach any subject, but I especially enjoy with special education, and Title One programs that help students with reading and math subjects. I hold a Bachelor's of Science degree in English with a Creative Writing Concentration and a minor in Spanish. I also earned a Master's Degree in TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages also known as MATESOL). During my professional career, I have researched the benefits of reading which I presented at the TESOL International in Boston and have worked building creative writing opportunities for my students that included writing poetry and short stories. I also took my students to schools and nursing homes to read aloud to students and residents which was a huge success. My experience includes teaching, reading, writing, listening, and speaking classes. I remain in touch with students decades after having taught them and it is one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life.
